Rwenzori Mountains National Park is nestled in western Uganda, covering an area of 1000 km². It was established in 1991 and later recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site in 1994, with its glaciers and montane savannas at different altitudes. Ruwenzori, which meant “rainmaker,” was the local name and was later named Rwenzori, meaning “mountain of the moon,” by Henry Stanley.
The Rwenzori Mountains is ranked in the third position with the highest peak, Margherita, after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, with four other peaks like Beaker, Gessi, Genin, and Sovioa.
